The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has intimated telecommunications companies operating within the state that obtaining the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) before the erection of new mast is non-negotiable.
The General Manager of the Agency, Alhaji Sa'ad Ayuba Danmusa, at a meeting with the Telecommunication operatiors, said that further monitoring would be given to the newly erected masts and those already erected to ascertain that the radiation of the masts are not beyond permissible limits and are not endangering the lives of the people of the state.
Dan-musa further stated that since the government of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is one that is citizens' welfare centered, they would also be required to submit their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) results which is to include the soil test result to ensure that the location chosen is good and not susceptible to earth quakes in the future.
The Administratve Officer of the Agency, Mr Usman Umar, told the delegates that Section 6 of the Agency's law confers on it the right and power to monitor radioactive levels and that the company should not think about the cost but rather the positive impact this will have on the people.
Also, the Head of Ecology Unit, Mr Tolulope Oluwadamilare, explained that although the radiation from masts are non Ionizing, they have some effects on the human body and these cannot be overlooked as the agency is responsible for ensuring that the environment is safe and conducive for human habitation.
The Regional Head of Globacom, Mr Malomo Samson, who spoke on behalf of the other telecommunications operators, commended the state government for having the welfare of the citizens at heart.
He promised that the latest development would be relayed to their managements and implemented in due course.
