KWSG FROWNS AT THE SPATE OF ENVIRONMENTAL NUISANCE IN THE STATE

The Kwara State Government has frowned at the spate at which environmental nuisance is increasing in some parts of the State, insisting efforts be intensified in curbing this recurring menace to avert possible outbreak of diseases in the State. 

The General Manager, Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, Alh. Sa'ad Ayuba Dan-Musa, disclosed this on Friday, during a close door meeting held with the staff of the Agency.

Alh.Dan-Musa noted that poor environmental hygiene and its menace is now taking a heavy toll at Kulende market, Sango Ilorin, hence, the need to setup a team of taskforce for rapid response.         
                   
According to him,
"It has been observed that the commercial activities at the new Kulende Market, Sango, Ilorin, especially, the commonly tagged Sunday-Sunday market in the area has been exhibiting serious environmental nuisance ranging from road encroachment, indecent dumping of waste on the road median, unsanitary maintenance of drainages among others, thereby posing serious threat to environmental and health safety of the populace living in the area and the people patronising the market". 

Consequence upon that, a joint taskforce with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry  and other State taskforce like KWARTMA, CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS was formed; and at the early hour today visited the market to ensure that total compliance to environmental sanity is further reinforced.   

Meanwhile, addressing the defaulters, the State Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Mrs Oluwaremilekun Banigbe, maintained that environmental cleanliness is a pivotal responsibility for both the government and the citizen, saying that environmental pollution is a chronic disaster that require holistic measure and be shunned at all cost. 

In her statement, "this monitoring exercise is not only for the government's benefit but also for you (the marketers), for the people patronising your market and the whole environment. 
 
Speaking further, " It is also fundamental that you take responsibility of your environment as it is for me to take good care of my own immediate environ; the government had fulfilled its part for constructing drainages for you, hence proper maintenance of your business premises and  regular evacuation of debris from gutters becomes your responsibilities, Banigbe stressed. 

Also speaking, the General Manager of the Agency, Alh. Ayuba Dan-Musa, reaffirmed the State government's resilient effort in ensuring that no stone is left unturned to curtail any act of gross indecency in its environ, saying that environmental pollution is capable of causing health hazards and outbreak of disease;uj hence, government will not hesitate to melt stern punishment on the culprits. 

Alh. Ayuba Dan-Musa, extolled the State government on its unabated efforts and priority given to environmental hygiene and safety of its citizenry, insisting that improper maintenance of waste cum noncompliance to  State's environmental laws is a deliberate attempt to sabotage its mission in making sure that Kwara State become safe and habitable place for all. 

The  exercise, which lasted between 6:00am and 12:00pm on Sunday morning, propelled all the traders within the market to rise to the occasion as they immediately began to clean and evacuate all the refuses both in thek drainages and at the road medians with strict monitoring of the taskforce, and ensured that all debris were properly packed into the big trucks made available by the State Waste Collectors. 

Thus, maximum success was recorded as all the marketers were made to comply with good environmental sanity. 
 
In the Team were, the Chairman Governing Board of the Agency, Mr. Paul Tziri ; the Agency Secretary, Mrs Idayat Folorunsho; all the Departmental Heads of the Agency as well as some members of staff of all the offices that partook in the exercise.
