KWEPA INVITES MOTEST ON SYNERGY TO SPUR ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANLINESS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), has called on the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology MOTEST  for symmetric approach to spur environmental cleanliness in all its higher institutions of learning in the state.

The general manager of the agency, Alh. Sa'ad Ayuba Dan-Musa gave the indication during its courtesy visit paid to the Ministry at its headquarters, today, in Ilorin.

Alh. Sa'ad, addressing the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, (Dr.) Alabi Afees Abolore, explained that the visit was to seek for the Ministry's cordial support to enable it tackle the recurring issues of environmental nuisance rampaging its higher institutions of learning in the state.

Dan-Musa expressed serious dissatisfaction at the intense rate at which various environmental nuisance persisted in most of its education institutions, urging that drastic steps be taken to ward off any advent of pandemic and its adversity on the immediate members of the school and its general environ.

He lamented that the ineptitude attitude and poor maintenance culture at which the managements of some of these institutions have been placing on hygienic ethical standard, saying that it could grossly expose the students to serious health havoc, said, Dan-Musa.
 
In his word, " most of our Tertiary Institutions in the state are yet to comply with the agency's environmental laws, as we have discovered in our inspections conducted on them; and all these environmental vices are the root causes for frequent sickness among the students in tertiary institutions.

Ayuba, advised that, the Ministry as the sole regulatory body for all Tertiary Institutions in the state to take bull by the horn, in keeping all the management of Tertiary institutions on their toes to ensure that good hygienic practices and environmental standard of the agency is well complied with.

Dan-Musa, who restated the cardinal focus of the agency to include adequate monitoring and regulations of all regulatory premises within the state, canvassed that proper maintenance of waste, regular fumigation, well equipped toilet facilities among others would go a long way in promoting good health value and habitable environment for the staff and the students in its higher Citadels of learning.

Speaking on Environmental Impact Assessment, the general manager reiterated that its agency, by its laws, has a supervisory role on any infrastructural project and thus should always be intimated when the need arises.

He however, urged that henceforth, all the Tertiary institutions in the state should always consult the agency for accredited fumigators cum accredited waste collectors for the safety assurance and adequate service rendering, as well as to ensure a tidy and safer environment.

Responding, the Honourable Commissioner for Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Alabi Afees Abolore, applauded the agency on its good stride on environmental cleanliness and safety approach, adding that its Ministry is ever ready to encourage a smooth partnership with the agency to foster a progressive and sustainable environment for all and sundry in the state.
