KWEPA Warns Site Engineers Against Unethical Practices 

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, KWEPA, has  warned site engineers against unethical practices that may compromise safety standard of projects  in the state.

The General Manager of the Agency, Alh. Sa'ad Ayuba Dan-Musa gave the warning during an on-the-spot inspection tour of projects   around Ilorin Metropolis today. 

Alh. Ayuba Dan-Musa, while addressing the site engineer and workers at Ita-Amodu Junction,  off Ibrahim Taiwo area where demolition of a storey building was ongoing, rebuked them for total disregard to ethical standards. 

While inspecting the facility, it was discovered that the engineer failed to put in place safety measures like, barricaded fence, that would trap down dusts; workers did not put on their Personal Protective Equipment, construction wastes were been dumped on the public road, and non provision of all the required environmental documents.

Ayuba, condemned the operation as it was unethical and capable of causing health hazard to the populace in the environment, adding that before embarking on the project, the Environmental Impact Assessment Unit of the agency was not been duly consulted.

"For what we witness going on here, it is not just a pure violation to environmental laws of the state but unethical to engineering professional standard for given no concern about the effect of your act on the habitants living or doing businesses in the area; remarked, the general manager.

Dan-Musa, who also asserted that the state government is much particular in ensuring that the state remain clean and habitable for its citizens,  added that it  would not tolerate any act of indecency.

He, therefore, ordered that the work be halted, pending  when due process and proper compliance to environmental laws takes effect.

Also speaking, the Head of EIA Unit of the agency, Mrs Nusirat AbdulRasaq, harped on the significance of the Environmental Impact Assessment on building construction.

She noted that the EIA report would enable the agency to monitor the construction from the foundation level to the finishing stage and ensure that the recommendations contained it the document prepared are duly abided.

 Mrs. AbdulRasaq urged that adequate supervision and proper  recourse to some key areas like toilet facilities, good drainage, hygienic management of both solid and liquid waste among other notable areas be prioritized by engineers in the building profession to curb against any environmental disaster.
